Overview
Opened in 2010, Semmozhi Poonga is Chennai’s most popular botanical park or garden spanning 20 acres and featuring numerous thematic mini-gardens.
The park preserves over 80 pre-existing trees, some of which are more than 100 years old.
Its 22 distinct garden areas include a cascading fern garden, an aromatic herbal/medicinal garden, an exclusive bonsai court, and a golden garden filled with amber-colored flowers
The park also has rare plant varieties directly imported from Thailand and China.
It includes an artifical duck pond that serves as a prime attraction for bird-watchers and nature photographers.
The park feels like a quiet and calm oasis in the heart of the city despite being surrounded by very busy roads.

Know Before You Go
The park can be explored in 1 to 2 hours. However, it is recommended not to rush your visit. Stay a bit longer if you want to experience some peace and quiet away from the city’s hustle and bustle.
The park is highly popular with couples. You are very likely to notice a few of them during your visit.
In addition to the entry fees, a significantly high amount is required to use professional cameras inside the park.
A monthly pass can be bought and used to access the park from 6 AM to 9 AM daily.
If you are comfortable spending money, you can consider also visiting the Kalaignar centenary park that is opposite Semmozhi Poonga.
Attractions at the Kalaignar centenary park include an air-conditioned greenhouse, a zipline, a bird aviary, a musical fountain, a horticulture museum and a tree tower – All of these attractions at Kalaignar centenary park have separate charges in addition to the entry fee that needs to be paid. For a family of 4, one might have to spend ₹1500-₹2000 visiting all attractions in this park.
