A Rare Urban Nature Reserve in Chennai with minimal and highly controlled human interference
Overview
Tholkappia Poonga Chennai (also known as Adyar Eco Park) was opened to the public in 2011 with pre-booking being mandatory to visit this Eco Park.
Entry is restricted with only a maximum of 100-250 people allowed inside per day/session.
The ecosystem in the park consists of a tropical dense evergreen forest with thick dark foliage.
There are over 160 species of plants/trees and more than 140 species of fish, amphibians, birds and reptiles (although it is not easy to spot these).
A number of rare species of birds have been spotted. Some of these are white-bellied sea eagle, pied kingfisher and chestnut-winged Cuckoo.

Timings: Walkers: 6:30 AM – 8:00 AM & 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM; Guided Tours: 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Closed Days: Thursdays, Some Public Holidays*

Know Before You Go
Online ticket booking is mandatory. Book tickets well in advance (https://www.crrt.tn.gov.in/) since tickets are limited and you might not be able to get them, especially on weekends.
Timings and tickets are different for guided and non-guided sessions with children being usually allowed only for guided sessions and timings.
Wear comfortable shoes. Avoid sandals or dress shoes.
Expect some mosquitoes (in the evenings) and humidity.
Eating is not allowed inside.
The park might feel secluded at times. Stick to the path.
