Victoria Public Hall Chennai – Timings, History & Tips
A Major British Building in Chennai which is One of the finest examples of British Architecture in India

Victoria Public Hall Chennai was built in 1890 in Indo-Saracenic style to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s ascension and it served as a major theater and public gathering hub in the Colonial era.
The hall has hosted historic meetings addressed by major figures in India’s freedom struggle such as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
The hall has also hosted numerous famous Tamil stage plays during colonial times featuring the theater company Suguna Vilas Sabha.
In 1916, the Justice Party and the birth of the Dravidian movement was established here.
Recently renovated and reopened in December 2025, the hall now features a museum with historical photographs and details on legendary speeches that were given in the hall.
The hall also now features exhibits of around 150 rare musical instruments associated with Tamil culture, photos of historical plays that were staged in the hall and an impressive AV show featuring the varied sounds of Chennai.
