Chennai Lighthouse

Overview

The current Chennai Lighthouse is the fourth one built in Chennai, operational since 1977.

The lighthouse has an elevator which takes one directly to the 9th floor which has a viewing gallery.

The viewing gallery provides one of the best panoramic coastal perspectives with a sweeping view of the Bay of Bengal, the entire stretch of Marina and Chennai cityscape.

There is also a small museum at the backside of the lighthouse on the ground floor that contains a big 2 meter lantern assembly among other interesting artifacts.

Though generally not an issue, there might be some crowd when visiting during holidays/weekends leading to wait times for up to 15-20 minutes.

Carry cash at low denominations. It might be possible to get the ticket using UPI payment at the lighthouse but this facility might not always work.

You can only spend 5 minutes at the viewing gallery on the 9th floor.

Do note that there are barriers at the viewing gallery to prevent accidents. However, people who are afraid of heights need to be a bit careful especially while trying to take photos and videos of the marvelous landscape since it is also windy at the top.
