Overview

Opened in 1976, the landmark monument honours Thiruvalluvar with a massive stone chariot (~40 metres tall) modeled after temple chariots in TamilNadu.

A life sized statue of Thiruvalluvar is present inside the chariot.

All 1330 couplets of Thiruvalluvar’s most famous work, Thirukkural are inscribed in slabs around the monument corridors.

The monument complex includes one of the Asia’s largest auditoriums, frequently used for cultural events.

Chennai Lighthouse

Overview

The current lighthouse is the fourth one built in Chennai, operational since 1977.

The lighthouse has an elevator which takes one directly to the 9th floor which has a viewing gallery.

The viewing gallery provides one of the best panoramic coastal perspectives with a sweeping view of the Bay of Bengal, the entire stretch of Marina and Chennai cityscape.

Overview

Built in 1890 in Indo-Saracenic style to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s ascension, it served as a major theater and public gathering hub.

The hall has hosted historic meetings addressed by Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

In 1916, the Justice Party was established here, marking what many consider to be the birth of the Dravidian movement.

Recently renovated and reopened in December 2025, the hall now features a museum with historical photographs and details on legendary speeches.

Overview

The memorials feature eternal flames and are located on the northern end of Marina Beach, dedicated to former Tamil Nadu leaders: C.N. Annadurai, K. Karunanidhi, M.G. Ramachandran, and J. Jayalalithaa.

While clustered together, the Anna Memorial is distinct from the MGR & Amma Memorials, as they represent leaders from the major opposing political parties of the state.

The site also houses museums exhibiting the lives and achievements of these influential political figures.
