Best Apps to Use in Chennai: Every App You Need (2026 Guide)
Whether you’re a resident, a student or someone who has just moved to Chennai, there are more than 10 essential apps that can make everyday life in the city much easier. From booking taxis, ordering food and groceries, and finding restaurant deals to tracking buses, buying metro tickets and booking home services, these apps help you save both time and money. This guide highlights the best app for each need, along with useful alternatives worth installing.
1. Taxi, Bike and Auto Booking
- Uber is the best app overall for taxi booking in Chennai and usually provides the cheapest taxi, bike and auto booking options. However, because of this, it might also take a bit longer for some drivers (particularly auto drivers) to accept your request.
- Rapido is excellent and is the best app overall for booking auto and bike rides. The fares might be slightly higher than Uber, but drivers generally accept rides much faster. However, it is not recommended to rely on Rapido for cab bookings, as its taxi coverage across the city is relatively limited.
- Red Taxi usually offers the best-maintained taxis for travel within Chennai. However, its fares are significantly higher than Uber for short trips (though they may be similar for longer trips depending on demand), and its service is mainly limited to the core city areas. Red Taxi is also a good choice if you want a hassle-free booking experience, as drivers generally do not negotiate fares.
- It is recommended to use Ola only as a last resort for booking rides in Chennai. Fares are usually significantly higher than competing apps, and it often takes longer for drivers to accept ride requests.
2. Food Delivery
- Swiggy and Zomato are easily the best apps for food delivery in Chennai. It is recommended to install both, as it is difficult to predict which app will have the better offers, discounts or restaurant availability on any given day.
- To avoid platform fees, and depending on the cuisine you prefer, you can also install and order directly through restaurant apps such as EatSure (for Rebel Foods brands like Faasos, Behrouz Biryani and Oven Story Pizza), Pizza Hut, Domino’s, KFC and McDonald’s, especially when there are no attractive offers on Swiggy or Zomato.
3. Grocery Delivery
- Zepto is the best app overall for quick grocery shopping in Chennai, as it generally offers the best deals and discounts across a wide range of products.
- It is also recommended to install Blinkit if you need extremely fast deliveries. Blinkit also tends to serve some fringe areas of Chennai that Zepto may not currently cover.
- Instamart (available within the Swiggy app) is a good alternative if you already use the Swiggy ecosystem and prefer managing both food and grocery deliveries through a single app.
- BigBasket is the best app for planned bulk grocery purchases such as rice, atta, pulses, sugar and other monthly household essentials.
4. Metro & Suburban Train Travel
- CMRL is the official Chennai Metro app and can be used to view the metro route map, check station information and see the timings of upcoming metro trains for your journey.
- CMRL and Chennai One can both be used to book Chennai Metro tickets. However, apps such as Uber, Rapido and RedBus also allow metro ticket booking and may occasionally provide offers that are not available on the CMRL app.
- Where is My Train is the best app for tracking the live status of Chennai’s suburban trains. Tickets for suburban train journeys can be purchased through the Chennai One app.
5. Dining
- Swiggy Dineout and District are the best apps for finding dine-in offers and restaurant discounts in Chennai. It is recommended to check both apps before making a reservation, as the available offers can vary.
- Occasionally, EazyDiner may have better discounts or cover restaurants that are not available on Swiggy Dineout or District, making it a useful backup app.
- Nearbuy offers buffet and thali deals for a limited number of premium restaurants and hotel brands, including Radisson Blu, Mercure, AB’s, Rajdhani, Sheraton and Courtyard by Marriott.
6. Home Installations & Repairs
- Urban Company is undisputedly the best app for repair, servicing and installation work in Chennai. It offers a wide range of home services across the city, and technicians are usually available even in many of Chennai’s fringe areas.
- NoBroker is a good alternative for home services and may occasionally offer better prices or promotional discounts than Urban Company for certain services.
7. Spa, Massage & Salon
- Nearbuy is easily the best app for finding excellent discounts on in-person spa, massage and salon visits across Chennai.
- Urban Company is the best app overall for booking at-home salon, grooming and massage services. However, YesMadam generally offers lower prices for similar services. Do note that YesMadam currently provides services exclusively for women in Chennai.
- Neither Urban Company nor YesMadam is likely to provide good coverage in Chennai’s fringe areas, so availability may be limited outside the main parts of the city.
8. City Bus Travel
- Chennai One is an excellent app for booking tickets on Chennai city buses. You can simply scan the QR code or enter the OTP displayed inside the bus to purchase your ticket.
- Chalo is the best app for tracking the live location of city buses. It uses GPS data from the buses and provides accurate real-time tracking most of the time. Although Chennai One also offers bus tracking, it is noticeably less effective than Chalo for this purpose.
- We recommend using Google Maps to plan your journey and identify the buses to take. While Moovit is slightly better for public transport planning, Google Maps already provides excellent route guidance, making a separate download unnecessary for most users.
