Overview

One among 12 Indian beaches with a blue flag certificate (awarded by a Denmark-based organization) to recognize excellence in maintenance of high quality standards.

The blue flag certified part of the beach extends for only about 400 meters (out of a total of 3 Km).

The beach is also named as ‘Covelong beach’, a name given by the British who could not pronounce ‘Kovalam’.

Things to Know before Visiting

A minimal amount needs to be paid for entry into the blue flag certified part of the beach though the other parts are free.

It is not recommended to visit the non-certified parts of the beach as they are known to be unclean.

The path to the beach might be narrow with plenty of craters. One needs to be careful while driving through this stretch to reach the beach.

It is recommended to not stay at the beach beyond 6 PM/7 PM.

1. Is Kovalam Beach safe for swimming?

Swimming is allowed only in the Blue Flag certified zone, where lifeguards are present and wave patterns are monitored. Other parts can have strong undercurrents and are not considered safe for casual swimming.

2. What is the best time of day to visit Kovalam?

Early morning (6:00–9:00 AM) and late afternoon to sunset are ideal. Midday can be extremely hot, and crowds peak after 4:30 PM.

3. Is there a Metro Station nearby?

There are no Metro or Train stations nearby.
